Carbohydrates . . . We love them. We crave them. They give us energy. They taste so good.
Americans now eat more carbohydrates than ever - 50 more pounds per person each year in the last ten years. They are thought to be a major contributor to obesity – even more so than fat! Today’s societal pressures often cause us to eat foods that are quick and easy, and those are the fast foods high in carbohydrates. We are also becoming more sedentary in routines where we get home from work, eat a quick meal and sit down in front of the television or our home computer to relax. Unfortunately, we burn very few of those excess carbs channel surfing or web browsing. If we do not burn these calories for energy, they end up being stored as fat. If we consistently exercise and strive to be more active daily, we will store less of them as fat. But the reality is that most people are working harder, longer days and many times simply don’t have the physical energy left to stay that active daily.
